My favorite. Sitting with my coffee reading this as one of my favorite Christmas traditions.
Aunt Ida’s house to me in Hank & Mary’s on West 33rd.
Dale has just picked up Aunt Marie. She has her special sugar cookies with the pink frosting. Her hard backed folding chair is already set up, so her back won’t hurt. Rose and Mary scramble to get dinner ready. The long table the reaches almost to the couch is set. The stars are taped to the ceiling. The village is set up under the tree. Grandpa Henry has wrapped each gift with a ruler. The boxes are military grade perfection. Christmas records are playing, Sinatra, Mathis, Bing Crosby. Beb is yelling about the Browns to “Jake” with a box full of bubble gum for my sisters and me. Walt laughs on the couch with his scruffy beard at the scene.
Once dinner is cleared. Amy, Kris and I play under the table and listen to the adults play pinochle. Grandma Mary doesn’t even care that we color on the underside. More yelling, laughing and banter. It’s hot, windows are open. Uncle John’s friend Kevin comes over. Bottles of beer get drank and more and more laughter.
I miss this, every bit. I miss the love, the bowls of M&M’s. Grandpa Henry asking 10 minutes after dinner is cleared if we kids are hungry. He’ll peel us an orange. Do we want a banana?
How blessed we are to have our own Aunt Ida memories. Falling asleep, snuggled up in our dad and uncles childhood beds, with a tiny door as the only separation between us as we drift away to sleep and a legacy of love.
